AMA policy states that medical liability reform be construed in the context of managed care and be consistent with these objectives: that (1) all managed care organizations (MCOs) are held responsible for assuring quality healthcare, and are held liable for any negligence on the part of the health plan resulting in patient injury; (2) physicians know and are able to carry out their professional obligations to patients despite cost constraints and contractual obligations to MCOs; and (3) coordinated patient safety systems tailored to managed care arrangements are in place.
