The AMA will continue to advocate to third party payers’ acceptance of symptoms, signs, ill-defined conditions, and supplementary classification of factors influencing health status (Z codes), as valid, medically necessary reasons for patient encounters, work toward expansion of these codes for screening examinations where appropriate, and urge payers to provide reimbursement for these services within the parameters of the patient’s health insurance coverage.
